The Medical Coordinator, a licensed physician, ensures Kinsmen Place Lodge's quality of medical care for our residents.  He liases with residents' physicians and community services.  He is an integral part of Kinsmen Place Lodge's  interdisciplinary team.

Nursing Services

The Professional Nursing staff includes Registered Nurses (RN’s) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s).  The nursing staff will work with the residents’ personal physician and other members of the interdisciplinary care team, and address any symptoms or changes in residents’ conditions.  Nursing staff are available to provide information on health care issues.  A Registered Nurse is on duty 24 hours a day.

Care Aides assist with the many activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, shaving, eating, walking, transferring (bed-to-chair, sit-to-stand) and toileting.

Social Work

The Social Worker is available to assist residents and their loved ones with personal, social, financial and legal matters. She can provide short-term counseling, support, information and referrals to appropriate community resources.

Pharmacy

All medications are dispensed by the Lodge's designated pharmacy.  They also are responsible for the billing process.  The pharmacy provides regulatory policies and procedures for the nursing staff to ensure resident safety.  They audit residents' medications on a regular basis, communicate with the resident's physician as needed, attend residents' care conferences and are part of the Medication and Safety Committee.  The pharmacy is also available to discuss personally each resident's medication profile when requested by the appropriate person.

Podiatrist

The services of a podiatrist are available on a regular basis.  A small fee may be charged for this service.

Dentist

Residents are encouraged to visit their own dentist regularly.  A mobile dental clinic visits the facility yearly to assess dental care and carry out dental treatment.  Nursing staff can help arrange appointments.  Dental costs are the responsibility of the resident or family.

Pastoral Care

Our pastoral care program includes individual support and counseling by the chaplain, as well as group programs to meet the spiritual needs of the residents.  Church services of various denominations are conducted twice weekly by clergy and volunteers from the Surrey area.

NUTRITION

We recognize the importance of food in meeting not only the residents' nutritional requirements, but also their cultural, physical and social needs.  We are committed to serving the best possible meals in a warm, friendly and happy environment.

The diet of each resident takes into consideration any special needs which he/she may have, in addition to food likes and dislikes.  The nutritional status and care of each resident is assessed on a regular basis.  Residents and families are encouraged to actively participate in the planning of menus through the Residents Council.

Any food obtained from outside the Lodge kitchen should be given to the dietary department for safe storage and handling.  This food will then be served to the resident as part of their regular diet.  Snacks may be kept in the residents' room as long as they are in a sealed container and are regularly checked for spoilage by the resident, family or staff.

All meals and snacks are served in the dining room, and each resident is assigned a table.  Tray service is provided for residents who are ill.  Self-serve coffee is available in the main lobby during the day.

Guest Dining

Residents who wish to have a guest for a meal are asked to notify the Receptionist at least 24 hours in advance.  There is a nominal charge for guests.  As table space in the dining room is limited, residents and their guests will be seated in the activity room.

Maintenance staff is on duty in the facility seven days a week.  If you have a maintenance problem in your room, please notify the care staff on your floor who will inform maintenance.

Maintenance ensures residents’ rooms are in good repair and furnished properly.  Regular daily checks on floors are done to ensure safety and quality control in the building.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping services in the building are provided seven days a week from 7 am until 10 pm.   Each room is cleaned on a daily basis with a general cleaning of all rooms done on a weekly basis.

 FINANCES

How are residential care rates calculated?

The daily rates for user fees are determined by the Ministry of Health.  Rates are based on an individual’s income and are calculated by the Region using the resident’s last tax return.

Residential care rates are based on residents’ “Remaining Annual Income.” This figure is derived from the last tax return from Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (previously Revenue Canada), using the dollar values of lines 236 and 435, calculated as follows:

If a resident of a care facility is married and their spouse is still well enough to remain at home, the rate calculation is done two ways: The first calculation includes family income while the second considers only the resident’s income.  The lower of those two rates is applied.

·       Residents’ net income (line 236)

·       less Taxes paid (line 435)

·       less Annual deduction of $10,284 (if single) or

annual deduction of $16,752 (if married)

·       less Earned income (up to $15,000 per person

= Remaining Annual Income
